Stay Safe in the Sun!

Mid-State Health Center is urging parents and caregivers to prioritize skin safety, particularly for pediatric patients, as the summer months approach. With the increase in outdoor activities, exposure to harmful UV rays becomes more common, highlighting the necessity of proper sun protection.

As temperatures rise and families spend more time outside, it’s crucial to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful effects. Children are even more susceptible to sunburn and long-term skin damage due to their thinner and more sensitive skin compared to adults.

Skin safety and sun protection are fundamental components of a healthy lifestyle. The sun’s UV rays can cause irreversible damage to the skin, leading to sunburn, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Prioritizing skin protection not only preserves the skin’s youthful appearance but also plays a crucial role in preventing serious health concerns. Embracing sun-safe habits empowers individuals to enjoy outdoor activities safely while maintaining the long-term health and resilience of their skin.

Dr. Nettie Colella, Pediatrician at Mid-State Health Care, emphasizes the importance of incorporating sun protection into children’s daily routines. “Children’s skin is particularly vulnerable to sun damage, which can have long-lasting effects on their health,” says Dr. Colella. “Applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wearing protective clothing, and seeking shade during peak sun hours are simple yet effective ways to safeguard their skin.”

Sunscreen should be applied generously and reapplied every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating. Additionally, parents should dress children in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection to provide additional defense against harmful UV rays.

Mid-State encourages families to prioritize skin safety and make sun protection a top priority during outdoor activities. By taking proactive measures to protect children’s skin from the sun’s harmful rays, parents can help reduce the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer in the future.
