December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month: A Reminder to Put Safety First This Holiday Season

Dec 17, 2025 | Health Highlights, News, Uncategorized

The holiday season brings joy, excitement, and the tradition of giving, especially when it comes to toys for the children we love. December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month, offering an important reminder to keep safety in mind when selecting gifts.

Most toy-related injuries are minor, such as cuts, scrapes, and bruises. However, when toys are not age-appropriate or are used incorrectly, the consequences can be far more serious. Taking a few extra moments to consider safety can make a meaningful difference.

“As we all choose gifts for the children in our lives, we want the experience to be fun and meaningful,” said Nettie Colella, MD, Pediatrician with Mid-State Health. “Taking a moment to check age recommendations, ensure toys are sturdy, and avoid small parts can prevent injuries and keep the holidays safe.”

Tips for Choosing Safe, Age-Appropriate Toys

To keep your loved ones safe this holiday season, consider the following guidelines before purchasing or gifting a toy:

  1. Read all labels carefully. Warning labels provide valuable information about proper toy use and recommended age ranges.
  2. Avoid choking hazards. Ensure all toys and their parts are larger than a child’s mouth, especially for toddlers and infants.
  3. Inspect toys before buying. Stay away from toys with sharp edges, points, or components that shoot off unexpectedly.
  4. Look for sturdy construction. Thin or brittle plastics can easily break into dangerous pieces.
  5. Check for nontoxic materials. Only purchase toys clearly labeled as non-toxic to prevent accidental poisoning.
  6. Always follow age and safety guidelines on toy packaging, match toys to a child’s developmental stage, and encourage proper use.
  7. For riding toys, including scooters, balance bikes, or skateboards, be sure children wear helmets and protective gear every time.

This December, let’s commit to making safety part of the holiday tradition. Thoughtful toy choices not only bring joy, they also help protect the children in our lives and ensure a happy, healthy season for all.
